I HAVE LIVED IN OLD ORCHARD BEACH, MAINE FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE. IN JANUARY OF 1980 I BECAME A MEMBER OF THE OLD ORCHARD BEACH CALL-FIRE
DEPARTMENT. I RETIRED AS A LIEUTENANT IN FEBRUARY OF 1997. I AM A MEMBER AND SECRETARY OF SOUTHERN MAINE FIRE NOTIFICATION
ASSOCIATION (A FIRE RELATED RADIO CLUB), AND I PAGE FIRE INCIDENTS FOR EAST COAST PAGING SYSTEMS (AN EMERGENCY INCIDENT NOTIFICATION PAGER SYSTEM). ON OCCASION, I HAVE VOLUNTEERED IN THE FIRE
TOWER ON MT. AGAMENTICUS IN YORK, ME. IN 1988, I BECAME A DISPATCHER FOR THE SACO, MAINE POLICE DEPARTMENT. ON JULY 19, 1999 WE
COMBINED THE POLICE & FIRE DEPARTMENTS' DISPATCHERS AFTER EXTENSIVE CROSS TRAINING AND A LOT OF UPGRADED EQUIPMENT IN THE DISPATCH CENTER.
IN DECEMBER 2000, THE CITY OF SACO WENT ON-LINE WITH ENHANCED 9-1-1 AND ALL DISPATCHERS WERE TRAINED BY VERIZON TO USE THE EQUIPMENT. IN 2002, ALL DISPATCHERS IN SACO WERE CERTIFIED AS EMERGENCY MEDICAL
DISPATCHERS, TO ENABLE DISPATCHERS TO GIVE PRE-ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS TO CALLERS FOR RESCUE RELATED INCIDENTS.
WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY SINCE THE DAYS OF JUST ANSWERING THE PHONE AND TALKING ON THE RADIO!
